Nissan Gets Supercharger Access with the Lectron Vortex Plug

Nissan has officially joined the growing list of automakers whose electric vehicles can now access Tesla’s Supercharger network in the United States and Canada. Beginning on December 10, current Ariya owners can enjoy access to 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations across North America with a NACS adapter of their choice.

The only Nissan EV model compatible with Tesla’s NACS adapters is the Ariya, which comes standard with a CCS (Combined Charging System) port. Unfortunately, the ever-popular LEAF is incompatible since it uses the CHAdeMO charging standard, which Tesla does not support.

Expanded Charging Access

This recent development means there are now over 100,000 public chargers in the US and 25,000 in Canada within the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network (NECN). Real-time charger availability can be viewed via the MyNISSAN app on the Ariya's infotainment system. Drivers register a default mode of payment on the app, then, once in a compatible Supercharger, they can simply tap the screen to start the charging session.

Adapter Options

The Japanese automaker is releasing a NACS adapter kit that interestingly includes another “adapter”–a piece of plastic that blocks the hollow part between the two DC pins on the Ariya’s charging receptacle. While the Ariya’s charging port works at most CCS fast-charging stations, the same hollow space between its DC pins isn’t common among other CCS-capable EVs. Nissan says this additional plastic “adapter” will allow the NACS adapter’s locking mechanism to work.

Early NACS joiners including Ford and Rivian are either sending out complimentary adapters according to EV delivery dates or offering them for around $200. But with supply chain issues, the waiting time has since been extended for a lot on the list, with some receiving multiple pushbacks since March 2024. This opens the doors for EV owners to explore other NACS adapter brands that won’t make them wait in vain or have them shove a piece of plastic into their charging receptacles, like the Lectron Vortex Plug.
