Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of charging adapter does Tesla use?
Tesla vehicles use a proprietary charging connector for Level 1, Level 2, and fast charging. The Tesla connector is not compatible with standard charging connectors used by other EV manufacturers, such as the J1772 connector used for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. However, a J1772 to Tesla adapter and CCS adapter can make charging a Tesla at J1772 and CCS charging stations possible.

Can I charge my Tesla at a non-Tesla charger?
Unfortunately, you cannot directly charge a Tesla at a non-Tesla EV charger. This is because Tesla's electric vehicles use proprietary charging technology that is not compatible with the standard J1772 plug used in most public charging stations.
Thankfully, you can use a J1772 to Tesla adapter that allows you to charge your Tesla using any J1772 charger.

Does Tesla come with NEMA adapters?
No, but the Tesla Mobile Connector, which has to be purchased separately, comes with NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 14-50 adapters.

What adapter do I need for my Tesla?
The answer depends on what kind of charging station you have. If you’re charging at a Level 1 or Level 2 J1772 charging station, you’ll need a J1772 to Tesla Adapter And if you’re charging at a CCS fast charging station, you’ll need a CCS charger adapter.

What adapters does Tesla come with?
A J1772 Adapter is included with every Tesla vehicle delivery.

Can you plug a Tesla into a 220 outlet?
Yes, Tesla EVs can be plugged into a 220-volt outlet using the Mobile Connector.

How much does a Tesla charging adapter cost?
The cost of a Tesla charging adapter can vary depending on the type. A CCS Combo Adapter costs around $200, while a standard J1722 adapter costs around $50.

Can I use a Tesla charger with an adapter?
Absolutely! Tesla owners can charge their vehicles with Level 2 and DC fast chargers from other brands, such as ChargePoint, EVgo, etc., by simply using the right adapter. As a result of this ease of access to different charging networks, Tesla owners have more flexibility when it comes to finding places to recharge their vehicles.

Tesla charging adapters are essential components for Tesla drivers to charge their Tesla electric vehicles. They enable the use of a variety of charging outlets, including J1772 and CSS chargers, depending on the type of adapter that you have.

Types of Tesla Adapters

Tesla vehicles use a proprietary charger, so in order to use other types of charging outlets, a Tesla charger adapter is required. Tesla offers several types of adapters that are compatible with their proprietary Tesla chargers, including J1772 to Tesla and CSS Charger Adapters.

These EV charging adapters provide compatibility with various outlets, allowing you to charge your Tesla in places where it might otherwise not be possible, like during road trips across the country or around the world.

J1772 to Tesla Adapters

The J1772 to Tesla Adapter allows you to connect your Tesla vehicle to public J1772 AC charging stations. Tesla to J1772 adapters are typically used at places that may offer public charging.

Every Tesla electric vehicle ships with a Tesla to J1772 adapter, but third-party companies also manufacture compatible adapters for purchase for your electric vehicle.

CSS Charger Adapters

A CSS Charger is a type of charging outlet used in residential and commercial applications. The CSS Charger Adapter enables you to use a Tesla vehicle with a CSS charging station, allowing you to take advantage of faster charging speeds.

CSS chargers are a variant of the J1772 and are standard for EV chargers. When using a CSS Charger Adapter with your Tesla, you can expect up to 250 kW of DC fast charging power. That means plugging in for faster charging times and more range for your vehicle.

It's important to note that not all Tesla models are compatible with the CSS Charger Adapter, so make sure to check your vehicle's specifications before purchasing. Moreover, EV drivers with older Tesla cars might need a retrofit in order to work with the adapter.

How to use Tesla charger adapters?

Using a Tesla adapter is relatively simple. First, make sure that the outlet or charging network you are using is compatible with your adapter. Then, connect the appropriate end of your adapter to your Tesla vehicle and plug it into the outlet or charging station. Finally, turn on the power to activate the charge.
