Superchargers Are Now Open to GM EVs: Skip the Line with the Vortex Plug!

Exciting news for General Motors (GM) electric vehicle (EV) owners—your vehicles now have access to Tesla’s 17,800 Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada! Thanks to a recent software update, GM EVs, including popular models like the Chevy Bolt, GMC Hummer, and Cadillac Lyriq, can charge at these stations using a North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter.

While Ford and Rivian have already opened up Tesla Superchargers to their customers, GM was initially targeting Spring 2024 for full access. However, with GM’s team facing challenges, including delays from Tesla's supply chain, access was finally granted later than expected.

As of writing, reports say that the GM-made adapter is already on backorder and that shipping is being done according to VIN (vehicle identification number). So, if you got delivery of your EV pretty recently, you may have to wait for months.

GM’s Supercharger access applies to all its major brands, including:

  • Chevy (Chevrolet): Bolt EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and more.
  • GMC: Hummer EV, Sierra EV.
  • Cadillac: Lyriq and upcoming EV models.

Some 2019 and 2020 Chevy Bolt owners will need a dealer-installed update to enable Tesla Supercharger access. GM has already started notifying affected Bolt owners via email to schedule appointments for the necessary updates.

Convenience at Your Fingertips

GM’s latest software update not only unlocks Supercharger access but also enhances the functionality of its mobile apps for Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac drivers. The update allows drivers to locate Superchargers, check station availability, initiate a charge, and pay for charging sessions directly from their apps.

While Tesla may charge non-Tesla users a slightly higher rate for charging sessions, the bonus access to over 231,000 fast chargers, including Superchargers and CCS stations, makes owning a GM EV more convenient than ever before.

Fast Access, No Delays

If you want to skip the line and be one of the first GM EVs to charge at your local Supercharger, Lectron’s Vortex Plug is readily available and ships in just 1-2 days! Plus, it’s competitively priced at under $200!

  • No Long Waits: Ships within 1-2 days, so you're never stuck waiting for your adapter to ship.

Expanding Your Charging Options

Superchargers aren’t the only fast-charging solution for GM EVs. In addition to Tesla’s extensive network, GM drivers still have access to Combined Charging System (CCS) fast chargers, giving them more flexibility on the road. GM is also part of the IONNA joint venture along with other major car makers Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and the BMW Group. This initiative aims to install 30,000 high-powered charging stations in urban areas and along highways across North America, further increasing the convenience for GM EV drivers.

GM is also rolling out "flagship EV charging stations" in major cities through a partnership with EVGo. This will add up to 400 new charging stalls across key states such as Arizona, California, New York, and Texas. These stations will support charging speeds of up to 350kW, perfect for long-distance travel or quick stops in the city.
