Why I Shouldn't Be Worried About EV Range
Look - I need to tell you something. I’m done with my gas guzzler. I held out for as long as I could, but these long lines at the pump and soaring gas prices are out of control. It’s time to embrace the future. I’m buying an Electric Vehicle.
The EV revolution is here and in full effect. I’ll admit, I was a little slow on the uptake. Like many, I was hesitant at first. I thought EV’s could never compare to the raw power of traditional combustion engines. But it’s important to admit when you were wrong - and I was wrong.
From the handling to the power, from the low maintenance to the environmental sustainability, you have way more than a car - you have a statement.
The big range question.
Now, you might be thinking, “Sustainability is great, but what if I’m out in my EV, and suddenly it runs out of power? What if I drive too long without charging it? What if I can’t make it home?”. Those were definitely some of the questions holding me back.
But that’s what they call range anxiety.
Once I began to understand some of the simple and interesting ways individuals and companies have addressed the range problem, I found there was really - nothing to worry about!
What was your biggest worry?
Whether EV’s were even equipped to handle long distances. I have a long commute (1.5 hours each way, on a good day!), so I’m always on the road. Besides that, ever since the pandemic hit, road trips have become my preferred mode of travel. I just didn’t think EV’s could handle the distance I needed.
But EV’s these days are going further and faster than ever before. Just look at Tesla’s Model S. Back in 2016, just 5 years ago, it topped out at a maximum range of about 300 miles. Quite impressive at the time.
But fast forward.
Now, in 2021, the Tesla Model S boasts a staggering estimated range of 412 miles! A huge increase. That’s like going from SF to LA on a single charge, easily!
Tesla is not the only company that’s going the distance. Far from it. Ford, BMW, VW and Skoda all have models that stay powered well past the 300 mile mark. Since most Americans drive only 39 miles a day on average, I will likely be just fine. So long as I remember to charge my EV.
But what if you forget to charge your EV?
While the US currently has around 43,000 public EV charging stations nationwide - most of them are Tesla specific. That means unless my EV is a Tesla, I won’t have access. That’s why I’ll definitely be getting an adapter for using a Tesla charging station. That way, I can just pull up, attach my adapter to the charger and plug it into my EV. It’s that easy!
But do you really want to go searching for a charging station?
No, I don’t. That’s why the best thing I can do to combat range anxiety is to invest in a home charging station, and just remember to charge my EV when I get home.
I already remember to shut off my car, turn off my headlights and close the garage door. Charging my EV every night will just become a small part of my daily routine - like putting on my shoes!
Getting a wall mount for my EV charger is also a good idea for my home charging station. Not only will it help keep everything clean and tidy, it will also keep my charging cable and other pieces from becoming frayed, cracked or broken - maximizing the lifespan of my EV charger.
But what if charging at home isn’t an option for me?
You’re not alone. Like many EV owners, if you live in an apartment, condo or duplex, you may not have access to a secure charging station at home. That’s okay. Again, keeping a portable charger and adapter in your trunk will keep you ready to charge your EV whenever the opportunity arises.
And there are a lot of opportunities!
Home on the range.
So, as you see, I really have nothing to be afraid of. EV’s these days come packed with range. I will likely be just fine on a single overnight charge. Should I happen to be out and about and need some power, there are many options available for quick and easy charging access, especially by keeping a portable charger and adapter handy.
I can finally bid farewell to range anxiety!
